| Description of Document: | This document is an application profile (AP) that clarifies the use of the properties in the description of Achievement Standards Network (ASN) standards document and the document statement. |
| Description Set Profile: | A machine-readable XML file defining the ASN Description Set Profile (DSP) useful in configuring metadata generation tools for authoring ASN achievement standards descriptions: http://purl.org/ASN/schema/ASN-DSP/. Machine generated PDF documentation of the ASN-DSP.xml schema is available: ASN-DSP.pdf. The ASN DSP conforms to the DCMI Description Set Profile specification documented at http://dublincore.org/documents/2008/03/31/dc-dsp/ with an XML schema available at http://www.purl.org/ASN/xsd/dcmi-dsp.xsd. |
1. Introduction
For a general introduction to Achievement Standards Network (ASN) data, see How the ASN Works. The ASN abstract and data models are based on the DCMI Abstract Model (http://dublincore.org/documents/abstract-model/) and its associated principles. The schema used to describe the two entities in the ASN conceptual model are drawn from a number of different publicly declared namespaces as set out in Section 3 below. In essence, the ASN is an application profile (ASN-AP) that has been encoded following the constraint language set out in Description Set Profiles: A Constraint Language for Dublin Core Application Profiles (http://dublincore.org/documents/2008/03/31/dc-dsp/). As an extensible metadata schema, the ASN embraces the DCMI principles of property (element) refinement and dumb-down.
2. ASN Conceptual Model
- The ASN Conceptual Model is framed in terms of two entities:
- The standards document representing the promulgated standard as a whole; and
- The statement representing an individual achievement assertion in the standards document. The standards document is comprised of a set of related statements.
- All standards documents and statements conforming to the ASN Conceptual Model are identified by globally unique identifiers in the form of URI that are dereferencable over the Web.
- A set of core properties define the relationships between the standard document and statements and between statement dyads. The relationships defined in the core are of two types:
- Structural relationships: Structural properties are responsible for replicating the necessary structural relationships between components of the standards document—e.g., structuring hierarchies of statements in the form of taxon paths and establishing the relationship between a standards document and its set of component statements.
- Semantic relationships: Semantic properties define relationships of meaning between statements including assertions of equivalence or other forms of conceptual synergy of any useful sort. For example, the «crossSubectReference» property asserts that a statement in one standards document is related in an interdisciplinary manner to a statement in a second standards document.
- The statement entity is of two kinds—original and derived:
- Original statements: Statements in standards documents formally promulated by a jurisdiction are called original statements in the ASN. Original statements are jurisditionally binding.
- Derived statements: Third parties may create derived statements that refine original statements. Derived statements have no jurisdictional binding and are clearly identifed as "derived." For example, a 3rd party may create in its own namespace a derived statement, or set of derived statements, that decompose an original statement into more granular derived statements to meet particular business needs. Conformant derived statements, like original statements, are identified by URI, are described using ASN statement properties (or property refinements (sub-properties) and utilize appropriate structural and relational properties associating them with original statements and other derived statements.
- The set of core ASN properties is extensible. The current set of properties will be extended to support additional structural and semantic relationships as they emerge in standards documentation and in use of standards data.
- At a minimum, dereferencing a standards document or original or derived statement URI must return the metadata describing the entity identified by the URI including any structural and semantic references to other ASN entities.
The following figure illustrates the entities and relationships in the ASN Conceptual Model.

3. Namespaces Used for ASN Properties
The ASN standards document and statement descriptions uses properties from the following namespaces:

5. ASN Property Declarations
Format of entries: The property declarations summarized in the table above are described in detail in the tables below. The format and content of the property descriptions are set out here:
Property URI A Uniform Resource Identifier used to identify the property. Label A human-readable label assigned to the property (May be represented in different languages.) Defined By An identifier of a namespace, pointer to a schema, or bibliographic reference for a document within which the property is defined. Source Definition The definition of the property in the namespace in which the property was orginated. (May be represented in different languages.) Source Comments Comments on the property from the namespace in which the property orginated. (May be represented in different languages.) ASN Comments ASN comments on the property including "best practice" information. (May be represented in different languages.) Type of Property The grammatical category of the property ("Property", "Sub-property" (i.e., property refinement). Refines The described property semantically refines the referenced property. A refinement makes the meaning of the element narrower or more specific as defined in the DCMI Abstract Model (http://dublincore.org/documents/abstract-model/). It will share the meaning of the unrefined element but with a more restricted scope. Property Domain The domain of the property being defined identifies the class(es) that may be acceptable instances of the subject of RDF statements for the property. Property Range The range of the property being defined identifies the class(es) that may be acceptable instances of the object of RDF statements for the property. Obligation Indicates whether the element is required to always or sometimes be present. In this application profile the obligation can be: mandatory, mandatory if applicable, strongly recommended , conditional with stated conditions, or optional. Mandatory ensures that some of the elements are always supported and mandatory if applicable means that this element must be supported if the information is available. An element with a mandatory obligation must have a value. The strongly recommended and the optional elements should be filled with a value if the information is appropriate to the given resource but if not, they may be omitted. Occurrence Indicates any limit to the repeatability of the element including zero, one to infinity.

6. Language Designations & Dates
All textual values in the ASN with the exception of properties with
values controlled by syntax encoding schemes (SES) (e.g.,
«copyrightDate») or vocabulary encoding schemes (VES) (e.g., «subject»)
must have language desgnations using xml:lang. This includes all
free-text values.
Dates should be encoded according to W3CDTF profile of ISO 8601 or using full ISO 8601.
7. Example Partial Encoding
Below are segments of ASN RDF/XML code based on the ASN Application Profile for Arkansas—Art History I: Fine Arts Curriculum Framework, Revised 2008. The full Arkansas RDF/XML document is available here. Segments representing the two entities in the ASN abstract model are provided: the standards document entity and the standards statement entity.
Standards Document:
An ASN encoding for the Arkansas Art History I standard, contains a single standards document (asn:StandardDocument) RDF description. The standards document is identified by dereferencable URI (http://purl.org/ASN/resources/D1000393). The document description contains URI relating this description to the descriptions of this particular standard's three top-level standards statements (gemq:hasChild).

Art I students are expected to use a variety of media, techniques, processes, and tools to compose original works of art that demonstrate understanding of the elements of art and principles of design, awareness of aesthetic concerns, and the ability to communicate ideas through artwork. Students will critique and reflect on their artwork and the art of others. Students will exhibit artwork and will assemble portfolios that demonstrate successful completion of Art I student learning expectations. Art I is required by the Standards for Accreditation and does not require Arkansas Department of Education approval.</dc:description>

Standards Statement:
Below are segments to two (2) from many statements (achievemet assertions) in the Arkansas standards document. We have included two related statement descriptions from a single taxon path. Again, each statement description is identified by URI (http://purl.org/ASN/resources/S113A67A and http://purl.org/ASN/resources/S113A67B). Each statement is related to the standards document in which it is embodied by referencing its URI (dcterms:isPartOf) and the second statement being below the first in the taxon path is related to the first statement by URI reference (gemq:isChildOf). The second statement then has the URI references for the child statements in the taxon paths stemming down from it.

8. ASN Globally Unique Identifiers
ASN globally unique identifiers (GUIDS) are in the form of Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI). URI for standards documents and standard statements are opaque. "An opaque identifier is simply one without any trace of embedded meaning .... They are ... as rare within our IT infrastructure as is purity elsewhere in human affairs. But they are also as impervious to bit rot and semantic deterioration as any identifier can be, and hence embody neutral virtue." [http://weibel-lines.typepad.com/weibelines/2006/02/identifier_ideo.html] As a result, ASN URI identifying standards documents and standard statements carry no meaning in terms of the content they identify. ASN URI are intended solely to support machine operations and are meaningless to end users. Where an achievement standard contains express identifiers for specific components of the standard, the ASN data model captures those identifiers and makes them available to consuming applications (see statementNotation in Section 4 above).
Implementation Advisory: To support interoperability, applications should identify ASN standards documents and standard statements at the system level using their full ASN URI. Identifiers derived through truncation eliminating the namespace portion of the URI are not guaranteed to be globally unique.
